Maintaining and storing fur: our expert advice

maintaining and storing fur

Winter is drawing to a end and you are wondering where to store your fur boots, mittens and pom pom beanie so the fur stays nice and warm for many winters to come? Here are our pro tips for maintaining and storing fur until the next winter.

1. Take time to inspect your fur

Before you do anything, do a fur check. Check if repairs are necessary; are the eyelets still in good condition? Are the seams still solid? Do the soles look OK? Inside, look for any abnormalities in the linings, your mock soles, or your sheepskin soles if you have any. If repairs need to be done following your inspection, know that the best time of year to do so is during the spring! As the winter months are rather busy with making winter boots and clothing, it is ideal to skip this season to seek redress. So between March and September is therefore the perfect period.

2. Brush the fur

If you have a pet at home, you probably already have an animal bristle brush. Brush all the fur parts with this brush. Also, it may be beneficial to use the steam about 10 inches from the product to restore volume and look to your fur, alternating with brushing.

3. Clean up

With fur, as with many things, maintenance rhymes with cleaning. With a damp cloth, remove all dirt, dust and mud from the leathers and soles of your fur products. It is also recommended to frequently clean your boots of all kinds, especially when calcium accumulates in them. It may be easier to leave a damp cloth near your entrance, that way you get into the habit of cleaning your boots quickly every day.

4. Choose the storage location wisely

The place where you store your fur items should first and foremost be dry, cool and ventilated. So, avoid any source of heat… but also avoid the freezer! The place should be cool without being too cold and air circulation is essential. If you put your furry boots in a closet, it is best if the door is open or it is a closet without a door. Strong light and UV rays are enemies of fur. Indeed, a long exposure to the sun can irreversibly dull the colors of your fur. Storing your fur articles near a window during summer is therefore to be avoided! Also, small animals like moths and beetles are enemies of fur.

Finally, if you store your fur items in an area with lots of other clothing, be aware that it is best if the fur is not too close or caught in the other items. As mentioned, ventilation is essential!
